What is Nursing?
Lyra Jessica Cresido
According to the dictionary, nursing is a healthcare profession that focuses on protecting and promoting good health, optimizing health, and preventing injuries. Nurses are said to be the bridge between physicians and patients during a patient’s care journey. But is that all it is? No! Nursing is more than a profession that helps patients; it is, in fact, the focus of their profession. There is more underneath this.
Nursing requires compassion when communicating with patients, caring for them, and educating them on what they should do to improve their treatment plan. Nurses focus on providing the highest-quality, safe patient care, guaranteeing the best comfort in their recovery environment. Yet, the essence of nursing goes far beyond clinical skills or patient education. It is a calling that demands empathy, resilience, and firm dedication. Nurses are present in the most vulnerable moments of a person’s life by providing comfort, advocating, and offering hope to anxious patients in times of uncertainty. They are not only caregivers but also educators, advocates, and leaders who shape the quality of healthcare for people and communities.
Beyond these responsibilities, nurses practice critical thinking and adaptability, often making quick decisions in rapidly changing situations for a patient's well-being. They collaborate with collaborative medical teams, advocate for patient rights, and continuously update their knowledge to keep pace with medical advancements. This dedication ensures that patients receive holistic, person-centered care that addresses not only physical needs but also mental and emotional health.
In conclusion, nursing is simultaneously a craft and a science. It is a dynamic profession that adapts to society's developing needs and continually strives to foster health. Nursing also alleviates patient suffering and promotes dignity. The impact of nursing is immeasurable, reaching many lives each day. To be a nurse is to accept a lifelong journey of learning, compassion, and service to the community, a vital force at the heart of healthcare.
