The frequency of nightmare disorder is much higher, often occurring weekly or multiple times a week. The impact of nightmare disorder includes significant distress, fear of falling asleep, and impairment at work or school. When experiencing nightmare disorder, you often wake up disoriented, alert, and vividly remember frightening, survival-related dream themes. The cause of nightmares associated with nightmare disorder is typically linked to underlying chronic conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, major depression, or certain medications.
